PHILADELPHIA — The Eagles’ season took another stunning turn Thursday when the team announced quarterback Jalen Hurts will miss Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers because of a blood clot in his calf.
It’s a major blow to a team already ravaged by injuries.
The Eagles said a follow-up ultrasound Wednesday night revealed movement in a small, superficial blood clot first discovered last weekend in London. Hurts was allowed to play in Sunday’s 19-17 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars after doctors determined he could safely participate.
The injury dates to the Eagles’ 24-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Oct. 4, when Hurts was cleated in the calf. The flight back from London may have exacerbated the injury.
According to the team’s official statement, Hurts first sought treatment Thursday, Oct. 8, after practicing fully Wednesday and Thursday. He received additional treatment Friday and was added to the injury report, although he practiced without restrictions.
After the Eagles arrived in London, doctors performed an ultrasound Saturday as a precaution. They discovered the clot but determined that Hurts could play.
“Our medical staff and doctors in London reviewed the results and concluded that activity and mobility were important and that Jalen could safely play,” the Eagles said. “Doctors recommended a follow-up ultrasound within 72 hours of the game and the return flight to Philadelphia.”
Hurts played the entire game against Jacksonville without apparent limitations. He received treatment Monday and Tuesday and participated fully in Wednesday’s practice.
But another examination changed everything.
“On Wednesday night, a follow-up ultrasound revealed movement in the small blood clot,” the Eagles said. “Jalen will be out for Sunday’s game vs. the Panthers as we determine the appropriate course of treatment. His health and safety are our highest priority.”
The Eagles said they have remained in communication with the NFL league office throughout the situation.
Interestingly, Hurts offered a hint Wednesday that something unusual had happened.
“It was a very unique experience, to say the least,” Hurts said of the calf injury. “I don’t want to get into the details of kind of leading up to the game and whatnot, but got nicked up in the Rams game.”
The Eagles (2-3), losers of three straight, now face another major personnel problem in a season already riddled with injuries and upheaval.
Hurts has thrown for 933 yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions through five games.
Tanner McKee is expected to start against Carolina. The Eagles released veteran Andy Dalton last week, leaving McKee and rookie Cole Payton as their available quarterbacks.
There is no announced timetable for Hurts’ return. For now, the Eagles have a much bigger concern than their struggling offense: the health of their franchise quarterback.
