Been seeing all the praise. it's hard to tell how much of it is just usual stuff with guys trying to be positive and how much is real. Though, I get a sense it is real. I don't remember words like these being used about the last guy. What'll be the most interesting is seeing if they get Hurts to really buy-in. I think Mannion's being smart about connecting with Hurts on a more human level first. Find out what makes him tick. Then fit that into why he's been so hesitant on stuff before, and that leads you to the way to sell Hurts on it this time and bring him along. so far it seems to be working.
On another note, you mention the o-line. A different system than with Stout. Does it seem like everyone's like Mailata and maybe excited about doing something new and not just the same ol' of the last several years?
The positivity among players (and coaches) about Mannion definitely seems genuine, way different than just saying the right things about Patullo and others. Even seems more sincere than with Kellen Moore, who had respect.
Mannion brings a different and fresh energy and gravitas. He has confidence and a commanding presence, and he's a true believer in his version of the West Coast offense. Patullo (a nice guy) was a beta boy who simply tried to copy other offenses.
Even Hurts seems ready to buy in with Mannion, but you're right that it really hinges on Hurts. That's the big question: Can Mannion challenge Hurts, and is Hurts ready to be challenged?
As for the O-line, when Mailata speaks, it's usually representative of the entire line. He's the OG, along with Lane, of course.
Barkley has definitely bought in. I think the receivers have as well. I think it's an exciting time.
My (early) opinion: Mannion is a great hire and a rising star. I thought this even before OTAs. But we'll see. It may take some time to come together, but it seems like we should start knowing for real by week 5 or 6.
